Brolly Arts Presents

Justice for Some

Rowland Hall St. Markʼs School

June 11, 2011 at 7:30pm

$15 at the door $10 for students

Alysia Woodruff, Sofia Gorder, Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp, Mallory Rosenthal, Laja Field, Ursula Perry, Belle Baggs and Rachael Shaw MAKE MODERN DANCE PROTEST

Collaborating from Utah to Virginia, inFluxdance has done it again! Back by popular demand, Justice for Some abstractly reveals PROTEST as it pertains to human rights and the political landscape. Marriage laws, body rights, gay teen suicide, political extremism, exploitation of women, human trafficking, disembodied protest, and media manipulation are just a few of the issues this world is SHOUTING about!

Human rights violations occur globally in all forms and factions. Locally we experience many forms of discrimination, biases, and judgments. Brolly Arts understands that the arts add to the vibrancy of our community and are a valuable means to initiate social dialogue and foster community connection. To spearhead this community project Brolly Arts is supporting inFluxdance as their non-profit umbrella organization to address important needs, interest, and issues in the community. Awareness and education are the first steps in social change. We are interested in what protest looks and sounds like and how to explore the current human rights movement on a kinesthetic level.

Justice For Some is a multi-disciplinary performance and community outreach project that highlights the history and future of protest while challenging the notion of equality and discrimination. Throughout the performance, issues such as gay teen suicide, body rights, bullying, marriage rights and the right to vote are just a few issues highlighted through dance, architecture, video, and music composition. After the performance is complete, a question and answer session will be conducted. To further the impact of the exploration of discrimination, we will work with hearing and Deaf high school students in workshops prior to this performance. The Deaf population can often be overlooked with arts programming and funding. This dance work is accessible to the Deaf and non-deaf population because it creates a vehicle to open dialogue on issues related to protest and equality. As a cultural and linguistic minority group, Deaf youth are marginalized even more because of communication barriers that impede on their ability to reach their same aged hearing peers in mainstream schools. The workshops and performances are ways to educate and talk about current issues that expose both Deaf and hearing youth to the benefits of dance and movement as a means of expression and communication. Simultaneously dance can show the hearing teens that movement can be the bridge needed to cross cultural boundaries.

This year we welcome co-director Sofia Gorder to the company. Sofia brings a new educatorʼs eye to this human rights choreographic vision. Her movement style is sensual, visceral, and raw. It requires the body to both indulge and attack movement dynamics. Justice for Some contains collaboration in choreography as well as original music score composed by Aurie Hsu and Steven Kemper, and a video composition projected throughout the show created by artist Erin Mayfield.

Alysia Woodruff, Sofia Gorder and Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp are united in their interest in contemporary dance as a way to build community, collaboration and facilitate the exchange of ideas. They strive to make dance accessible with innovative ways of communicating through movement that pushes the traditional ideas of collaboration in the dance world. Join them for an evening of protest and some unprecedented surprises.

This Seasonʼs show kicked off in Salt Lake City through a SugarSpace Artist in Residence Program Award that then traveled to Charlottesville, VA in February. inFluxdance will continue its tour to Montreal, Boulder and San Francisco. Join us for our one night performance of Justice for Some, 7:30pm at Rowland Hall St. Markʼs as we conclude our workshop with Deaf and non-deaf teen peer groups. Please stay for our post-performance Q&A session. Brolly Arts and inFluxdanceʼs Justice for Some are proud to be the recipients of the newly launched Salt Lake City Arts Council, Arts in Learning grant.

San Francisco. September, 6-13 2008. inFluxdance will present Identity Crisis as part of the 12 day San Francisco Fringe Festival. inFluxdance enthralls audiences with their integration of dance, theatre, and American Sign Language.

Identity Crisis will be performed on

Tickets are only $7!!

“It’s always great fun to see a group poke fun at the inspiration that feeds it. And the U.S. company inFluxdance did just that in the highly-entertaining piece Identity Crisis. Mixing taped narration and dance, we learn a little bit about the beginnings of modern dance, very tongue in cheek, and we learn about the psychological study of identity. Dancers Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp and Alysia Woodruff then riff on the themes. They are fun, skilled and never, no never, take themselves too seriously. The narration about the sometimes overblown intricacies of the art is hilarious – especially for dance critics who have seen their fair share of overblown post-modern dance.” –Katheryn Greenway, The Gazette, Montreal.

Brought to you by the twisted yet charming choreographers/dancers/teachers/subversives who brought you Montreal’s (and perhaps the world’s) first ever modern dance food fight, Spirit of the Fringe Montreal ’06, Best Dance Performance San Francisco Fringe ’07, along with…well you will just have to wait and see.

Come join us in Identity Crisis, a delicious piece of dance insanity, or let yourself wither away in solitude, shame and finally, despair.

inFluxdance Presents:

“Identity Crisis”

June 13, 15, 18, 19, 20, 21

Venue #1 Tangente
840, Cherrier- Montreal

***Voted best dance performance of the San Francisco Fringe Festival***

inFluxdance enthralls audiences with their integration of dance, theatre, and American Sign Language.

Friend, teacher, mother, son, artist, outlaw, homemaker, consumer – who are you, and who do you want to be?

Who does your mother / boss / dominatrix / president want you to be? ‘Identity Crisis’ is a moving exploration of the role conflicts that arise from post-industrial need diffusion, the commoditization of social structures and the reverse sublimation of blah, blah, blah, blah. You don’t care about that.

You care about this: you will never see modern dance this unpretentious and – dare we say – fun. Brought to you by the twisted yet charming choreographers / dancers / teachers / subversives who brought you Montreal’s (and perhaps the world’s) first ever modern dance food fight, Spirit of the Fringe Montreal ’06, Best Dance Performance San Francisco Fringe ’07, along with…well you will just have to wait and see.

Come join us in this delicious piece of dance insanity, or let yourself wither away in solitude, shame and finally, despair. Your choice.

Here are some audience reviews from SF:

“…A celebration of body language, as expressed through dance and ASL…It’s an amazing celebration of the fleeting and the hopeful. Look no further for ‘Best of the Fringe’.”

“… 5 Stars. I’m one of those “dance isn’t really my thing” guys. However if more dance ensembles put on shows like this one, I would be a convert.”

“… I fell in love with this group at the opening night party, and now I plan to stalk each and every one of these Rockers. Okay maybe not. Maybe I will just send as many people to see their show as possible.”

“… Brilliant, creative and one of the most physically exciting pieces I have ever seen. If you miss this, you will surely end up lost and stapled to the board.”

“…Fabulously original piece! …fantastic music and choreography that definitely kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire show. See these talented out-of-towners while you still can!”

About us (the details):

Alysia and Rose approach their shared interest in accessibility and communication from very different perspectives. Alysia Woodruff’s scholarly work explores the synthesis of the movement languages of American Sign Language (ASL) and modern dance. She is fascinated by the juxtaposition of ASL, a very specific movement language, with modern dance, an abstract form of movement as communication. Another fundamental principle of her work has been providing access to dance for non-traditional artists and underserved populations.

Rose is inspired to make movement accessible via her training in Laban Movement Analysis. She believes that dance is truly a communicative art form. The first way every human communicates is through movement and Rose holds the belief that this remains true throughout life. Her artistic process is anchored in exploring the creative art-making process as a communication process. The results of this exploration are powerful and prove that there are no limits in dance/movement as an art form. Her mission is to inspire and empower people to move their truth and create movement-based art.

Alysia Woodruff and Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp are interested in contemporary dance as a way to build community and facilitate the exchange of ideas. They strive to make dance accessible, innovative ways to communicate through movement and push boundaries of traditional interpreter, dancer and theater roles.

“… A mere sentence becomes more than a dance movement; it becomes an entire choreography.” (indyish.com)

This season, inFluxdance, is presenting 3 original works wrapped up into an evening length piece. This exciting performance draws in compelled audiences to view a variety of beautifully carved visual pieces. The company is pushing the boundaries of interdisciplinary dance speaking on a personal, community, and universal level. “

‘Identity Crisis’, conceived and performed by Alysia Woodruff and Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp, will find the simplicity in relationship while investigating the complexity of roles we try to define as women. We are experimenting with the elements of production and communication. By layering designs, American Sign Language, body language, and text we will show how context can create and change the meaning of dance.

In ‘Authority…Beauty’, Tanja London and Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp will join Dale (our mannequin friend) to explore a weighted relationship dealing with body image and historical beauty ideals. This piece will integrate design, vintage video footage and, of course, unique props that portray striking, and sometimes haunting images, of our societal values regarding beauty.

The final piece of the evening is inspired by Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. This dance looks at how this story serves as a metaphor for the larger world around us and the ‘thneeds’ that tempt us to destroy the beauty in our world. Using the text of Dr. Seuss and incorporating vibrant, quirky movement this piece will let your imagination unfold while hopefully reminding us of some important issues in our culture.

This show is fully accessible to both Deaf and hearing audiences.
