Two independent choreographers making modern dance mischief

Alysia Woodruff and Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp will present a modern dance concert, “This fairytale is not working out”. Collaborating for the first time, these two independent choreographers present an evening-length work of original choreography, text, and American Sign Language.

“This fairytale is not working out” is constructed as a series of vignettes that unfold inside the mind of a fairytale character in the midst of a nervous breakdown. From speed-dating to coping with the urge to bite a complete stranger, this slightly unhinged girl takes us on a light-hearted tour of the language and manners of our modern world. Rose and Alysia’s choreographic styles are similar in that they share the same aesthetic principles found in release-based technique. This dynamic and athletic technique is based on flow and movement efficiency while maintaining core strength and internal support.

Alysia and Rose approach their shared interest in accessibility and communication from very different perspectives. Alysia Woodruff’s scholarly work explores the synthesis of the movement languages of American Sign Language (ASL) and modern dance. She is fascinated by the juxtaposition of ASL, a very specific movement language, with modern dance, an abstract form of movement as communication. Another fundamental principle of her work has been providing access to dance for non-traditional artists and underserved populations.

Rose is inspired to make movement accessible via her training in Laban Movement Analysis. She believes that dance is truly a communicative art form. The first way every human communicates is through movement and Rose holds the belief that this remains true throughout life. Her artistic process is anchored in exploring the creative art-making process as a communication process, within ourselves and with others. The results of this exploration are powerful and prove that there are no limits in dance/movement as an art form. Her mission is to inspire and empower people to move their truth and create movement-based art.

Alysia Woodruff and Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp are interested in modern dance as a way to build community and facilitate the exchange of ideas. Join them for an evening of talking to strangers and other modern dance mischief.
